Chasing the Mirage

An Optical Illusion

As I grow older in years, I am aware that my life here on earth is drawing to a close. I pursued a bevy of mirages ( optical illusion), things that appeared real but were not in fact so. I remember watching movies as a child, one in particular where people were lost in the desert without water. They longed for shade, their thirst to be quenched, and a place to lay their head. As the heat was beating down in their aimless pursuit, their mind again displayed what they wanted to manifest. They changed their course but again were left in another dry and thirsty place; eventually leading to death.

This example is like many of the parables that Jesus spoke of. The scene in the desert and our pursuits in life can be very similar without God. Many are chasing the “All American Dream” of promising futures. We watch movies about love and develop a mirage of what we think our marriage should be. Yet, often times we discover selfishness, brokenness, suffering, and even divorce. We graduate from college to enter into a career where we see greed, selfish ambition, maybe even deceit and wonder what am I fighting for?

We may have even gotten really close to the “American Dream” only to have our entire life savings swindle away by corruption, or Cyberwar leaving us dry and leading to death, a spiritual death and yes, eventually a physical death too.

Depressing, I know! However, there is great hope to be discovered and that hope is only found in Jesus. What are you truly longing for? Peace? Joy? Love? Care? Do you know you can have all of those eternal gifts for free when you surrender and start fully pursuing a authentic relationship with Jesus. Everything begins and ends with God. He is the Alpha and the Omega. It’s out of this relationship that flows these priceless gifts. It’s the fountain that never runs dry. He is the river of life who restores our souls. He is the oasis in our desert.

Do you know you have a choice? Life or death. We can get off the treadmill of performance. His table is set before us with all we need and desire. Are you tired? Is your soul weary? Are you in a dry place? The mirage isn’t reality, Jesus is! He’s waiting on you! He’s waiting to satisfy your deepest needs, dreams, purpose but ultimately the choice is yours.

He loves you so much. Isn’t it time to let Him take it from here?

Others First

Have you ever heard the saying, “the fastest way to the palace is through the servants quarters?” Let me give you the prime example: Jesus could have come into the world as a  mighty soldier with a vast army but God flipped the script. Jesus came into the world as a helpless baby, walked through our suffering with us, lived without a proper home to call his own and died on a cross so we could have life and life more abundantly. See, it’s different in the Kingdom than in the temporal world. Jesus modeled what it means to raise others up whether it be a need, an encouraging word, or an opportunity. There was never a competitive spirit in Him. He lived His life serving and placing others before Him. He wasn’t insecure about others surpassing Him. If you step out, He will walk you through it. We mustn’t be afraid to give more of ourselves for He is with us.

The temporal world will tell you, me first. You must become successful first but eternal success is raising others to their potential. Who has traveled into your life that you have helped succeed? What’s so amazing about Jesus is that He shares His throne with us. My challenge to you is promote others above yourself. Let your ceiling become their floor. Cheer them on to greatness as we go lower so someone else can go higher. Trust that God will take care of you and your needs and even desires. He sees all and there is a great reward as we transition into the greater eternal reality.

Jesus is our role model. Greater things we will do.
